“Beach of Anthéor”, a small part of Esterel, the cove of Anthéor…
This card by Amandine Maria, “Beach of Anthéor” in Saint-Raphaël, presents a well-known beach in the Estérel. Recognizable by its railway viaduct and red rock cliffs, the site has attracted artists since the end of the 19th century, including the painter Louis Valtat. They come for its unequalled light, the mild climate, the preserved flora, the breathtaking panoramas!
Splendid residences were built there, and the drawing gives a nice overview! The artist shares in his notes the highlights of his walk, like a travel diary. The sounds, the smells, the sight: art summons the senses. One evolves with it: “the noise of the train”, “hot walk in the dust”, “the smell of Corsica”…
We can’t imagine, but this little piece of the Côte d’Azur has entered the great history. Between September 43 and August 44, the viaduct was a strategic target and a landing site for American troops. A commemorative plaque on the viaduct, in front of the beach, honors this feat of arms today.
