“Estaque chain”, a stroll in the creeks.
“Estaque chain” is a delicate drawing on paper by Amandine Maria. Surrounded by blue, the Estaque chain is a small massif that extends from Estaque west of Marseille to Martigues.
In this “walking map”, Amandine Maria proposes a vision of cartographer and poetess. The drawing emphasizes the alternation of the limestone rock, and the wooded areas of pine trees. The rugged landscape, jagged with ports and deep creeks, takes on the appearance of an abstract painting.
The ink and watercolor drawing adopts a panoramic format that describes the singularity of this tongue of land of the Côte Bleue.
Amandine Maria adds textual comments that energize the drawing, in the manner of a travel journal. “the smell of the Alpilles”, “fishing”, “small green hills”…
In “Estaque chain”, the marriage of drawing, painting and writing, the association of ink and watercolor, result in a small jewel of a luminous painting that we chose to present in an oak rod. It would form a nice diptych with another drawing of the same aesthetic and format, “Soubeyranes cliffs“, which describes another site of this Mediterranean coast, east of Marseille and Cassis.
