“Soubeyranes cliffs”, sacred Cap Canaille…
“Soubeyranes cliffs” is a delicate drawing by Amandine Maria. Between Cassis and La Ciotat, these emblematic cliffs are among the highest sea cliffs in Europe! Like the Sainte-Victoire, this site, and in particular the rocky and red mass of the Cap Canaille, has largely inspired painters throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. From the Provencal School (Olive, Garibaldi…) to the post-impressionists (Camoin, Manguin, Signac…) or to the contemporaries, all found there a subject of study and repetition.
Amandine Maria adds textual comments that energize the drawing, like a travel journal. “The air of the Sainte Baume”, “cap vers le Var”, “le bec de l’aigle”…
In “Soubeyranes cliffs”, the marriage of drawing, painting and writing, the association of ink and watercolor, result in a small jewel of a luminous painting that we chose to present in an oak rod. It would form a nice diptych with another drawing of the same aesthetic and format, “Estaque chain“, which describes another site of this Mediterranean coast, west of Marseille.
