“Vanities 2 – uk” is an aerosol painting on cardboard by James Cochran aka Jimmy C.

The pictorial tradition of the vanitas has existed since Antiquity, but developed particularly in Dutch painting at the beginning of the 17th century, a period marked in Europe by a succession of wars, famines and plagues. These still lifes include symbols of the ephemeral nature of our lives: skulls, hourglasses, candles, etc.

Today, many artists are reinvesting vanitas painting and invite their contemporaries to meditate on the fragility of human existence.

James Cochran does this in a very original way. The choice of a material without nobility, such as cardboard, contributes to this philosophical dimension. Moreover, with him, vanity is cheerful and colourful! We can detect the positive spirituality of the artist, thanks to his pastel palette and the pinkish halo that frames the skull.
